Our targets over the next 5-years are:
- To build and run the first integrated stroke pathway in Malawi, based at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Malawi and demonstrating substantial improvement in stroke related mortality and long-term disability and reduced stroke care costs. The Stroke Service will be led and staffed by a fully trained Malawian stroke specialist team and will provide evidenced based therapies and within five years will be capable of safely delivering restorative stroke treatment like thrombolysis. This will be achieved with ongoing support and in-situ training from the UK based project partners in order to deliver operational independence of the Malawian team by the end of five years.
- We will create a functional training and research platform to provide a sustainable programme of bi-directional knowledge exchange and clinical learning and introduce a programme of innovative multidisciplinary stroke research.
- Finally, we will carefully evaluate the impact of the introduced stroke pathway and work with Malawian partners to produce a template for the introduction of further stroke services in Malawi, and eventually surrounding regions, which includes the most successful components of the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital service model.
